Engine Compartment Style

What's Your Underhood Style?

Ford Mustang 289 hipo

What style do you want people to see on your engine when you pop the hood?

Stock-ish, vintage performance, sleek billet, modern, industrial, race bred?

Do you have a favorite underhood style, or does it depend on the car?

We definitely don't have a single answer to this question. For us it really depends on the overall feel of the car. For example, what we put our slick street muscle '68 Nova would be different than what we would put on Max Effort, our '67 Cougar XR7 road racer. And modern, high-tech billet parts can look out of place on a very stock restoration.

For our Day 2 bolt-on performance project on our '68 Mustang coupe that we used in the big annual paint 7 body special, we want to keep the underhood vibe very much inline with the theme of tech, so we're going to keep it very subdued and 1960's-ish. That means we'll probably stay with stock style (or at least vintage style) valve covers and use an open element air cleaner that resembles the 14-inch chrome ones found on 289 Hi-Po engines- but we'll add a high-flow element, of course.

So what about you- do you have a favorite underhood style, or does it depend on the car?
