The name “Lamar Walden” will fly right over many heads, but veteran hot rodders will nod their heads in appreciation when they learn that one and the same is now offering “W” engine big-block crate engines in both 409 and 509 cubic inch variants. For over 40 years, Lamar Walden has been recognized as the premier builder of Chevy’s original big-block; class and nostalgia racers from across the continent continues to turn to Walden for W power, and now his Doraville, GA shop is building the LWA 409 crate engine. The LWA 409 retains the engine’s three most distinctive features: its unique W-shaped valve covers, its wide embracing water pump, and its block deck machined at 64 degrees to the center line, unlike the 90-degree convention of most engines.
Of particular interest is news that the LWA block accommodates a 4.5-inch bore, increased from the original 4.3125 inches. By increasing the bore diameter the valves operate further away from the cylinder walls, allowing the engine to breathe better and to rev faster than its venerable predecessor. Interested?
