The $1 billion love child between Chrysler and Fiat has finally arrived after an 18-month gestation period, and it has the press buzzing—mostly about its promised 40 mpg and $16k entry price (although both promises are apparently mutually exclusive). The 2013 Dart has the standard Dodge crosshair grille with taillights cribbed from the new Charger, but most importantly, its swoopy aerodynamic design replaces the boxy and forgettable Caliber. Based on a stretched and widened version of Fiat’s Alpha Giulietta, the Dart will be built in Belvedere, IL using a trio of engines assembled in Dundee, MI. Speaking of which, the top engine for now is the 184hp 2.4-liter four cylinder in the R/T variant, but we’re hearing that a turbo 2.4 SRT-4 model will be coming next year. Six-speed manual and automatic transmissions span the engine line-up. With curb weight estimated at over 3,000 pounds, performance won’t be anything to write home about (until the SRT-4), but if you’re looking for a nice all-American commuter, the new Dart may be something you’ll want to check out.
