Custom builders have long found themselves fighting the SB-100 law in California that dictates that only 500 new titles for scratch built cars will be issued per year. Now with brand new Mustang and Camaro steel tubs available (and possibly more makes in the works), the competition for those few pardons is getting stiffer with no end in sight. As it is, hopefuls often arrive outside their DMV office of choice many hours before the doors open on the single day of the year that they are available. And believe us, all 500 are gone immediately.
Now, AB 1740 is the first real initiative to repeal the 500 car limit and instead require the DMV to register ANY car that meets certain requirements. This is an urgent bulletin for all California residents and anyone who owns, or appreciates custom built hot rods, street rods, and muscle cars.
Goodguys and the SEMA Action Network are working to rally the car community to back this bill, and all of us at PHR urge you to take the time to make your voice heard.
Below is the release from Goodguys;
We all need to act now in support of Assembly Bill 1740, a bill which would delete the current 500 'kit-car' limit on the number of specialty constructed vehicles that can be registered in the state on an annual basis. AB-1740 would delete this limit, and instead require the Department of Motor Vehicles to register any car that meets specified criteria. This is the biggest and most important issue to come down the pike in years in the Golden State for rod & custom guys & gals and we urge you to write letters, make phone calls and send e-mails to members of the Assembly Transportation Committee to pass Assembly Bill 1740.
AB 1740 will be heard in the Assembly Transportation Committee on Monday, March 22, at 1 PM, in Sacramento, CA. Please note that the "official" deadline for having your support registered in the official committee analysis is Tuesday, March 16. All communications should be received by the Assembly Transportation Committee at that time. It is recommended by AB-1740 creator, assemblyman and lifelong classic car lover Kevin Jeffries (son of legendary customizer Dean Jeffries) that you focus the majority of your energy in trying to persuade the Democratic assembly members to support AB-1740 as he feels most Republican assembly members favor the bill.
Three Ways to Act that are quick and painless!
1. Phone 'em! This is the easiest and quickest option. You simply call the Assemblyman or woman's office and say "I'm calling to support AB 1740." The secretary will record your name and your hometown while officially recording you as a supporter of the bill and that's all! No political debates, no confusion and it takes 10 seconds!
2. E-mail 'em! Send a quick e-mail announcing your support of AB 1740. Keep it simple. Make sure to include your name and hometown in the e-mail
3. Fax 'em! Send a fax to the Assemblyman or woman's office simply stating that you support AB 1740. Include your name, your hometown and that should do it!
Here is the assembly roster which includes mailing addresses, phone numbers and e-mails! Tell them why you support AB-1740 and why it is so important to remove the restrictive "500 car" limit!
