What we once knew as the Pontiac G8 GT—including its 6-liter V-8 Gen IV engine and six-speed automatic transmission—will indeed live on in Chevrolet garb, but only as a police vehicle. And like the movie, you too will have to steal one if you want to drive it, because they will not be available to the general public. The Caprice PPV will be built in Australia by GM’s Holden unit, and is based off the Zeta platform, like the outgoing Pontiac G8, the Holden Caprice, and the new Chevy Camaro. The Caprice PPV will churn out an estimated 355 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque, and will feature police car-specific amenities such as a high-output alternator, engine oil, transmission and power steering coolers, 18-inch steel wheels with bolt-on center caps, larger four-wheel disc brakes with heavy-duty brake pads, heavy-duty suspension components, police-calibrated stability control system, and driver information center in the instrument cluster with a selectable speed tracking feature. One particularly interesting feature is the "undercover" street-appearance package (9C3), which will deck this baby out in stealthy street trim. It remains to be seen how well such a unique-looking police-only vehicle could perform under cover, as there aren’t any civilian variants to mask it. The upside: by the year 2015, these ought to be showing up en mass as used fleet vehicles.
