When you think of Mopar performance, the Hemi comes immediately to mind. What you don’t typically think about are the old-school Hemi motors from the ‘50s, like the 361-ci (bored to 365 ci) Hemi brought to the Jegs Engine Masters Challenge by Daniel Miller, Ron Pratt, Bill Mewhinney, and Bob Walker (Gene Adams Performance and Hot Heads of Anderson, Ca.). This “classic” Hemi has an old-school IDA 48 Weber IR induction that feeds a Hot Heads intake and heads, for 613 peak hp. A solid-roller Engle camshaft with .750-inch lift keeps the gasses flowing up to the 7,000-rpm contest redline. With its big power numbers and small displacement, the little Hemi was able to knock down a qualifying score of 2,598.6—which was good enough to put it in the hunt for the finals. What a cool engine!
