Day 1--My Favorite Engine

Engine Masters

SKMFX Engines builds a 690hp Mopar low-deck big-block for $8K.

Right off the bat, you know you’re looking at something special when you see Jesse Robinson’s 471-inch Mopar. Dressed in Tuxedo black, the low-deck B-engine looks like an assassin, and with a peak output on 91 octane of 690 hp, it backs up its good looks with room to spare. Better yet, there’s nothing exotic in this motor; lots of off-the-shelf parts and eBay finds populate the tech sheet, and bring the total build cost to just a stitch over $8,000. That’s a tough bang-for-the-buck barrier to beat. We like the SKMFX engine so much, we’ll be shooting it as a tear-down feature that will appear later in the year. While all of the engines in day one competition were awesome, this one is my favorite: it looks great, runs great, and is priced just right! My hat’s off to the SKMFX team of Ron MacLean, Joe Rutters and Jesse Robinson for making this engine happen on a skinny-kid budget.
