After the '66 Mustang is done, what am I going to build?

I have a 510 at home waiting to be cut up and worked on but it's probably not appropriate for this magazine. I won't need to start a new project for a while, but when the Mustang is done, I'll want to get something to build for the magazine.

I would like to do a Chevy because deep down I'm a Chevy girl. I also want to do something a little different. That's hard to do when the popular models have been built a million times.


While thinking about the old days at the drag strip, I remember seeing a blue '67 Nova that sounded pretty tough. Upon further inspection I saw that it was a 250-ci straight six. 


So how about this, getting a straight-6 to run 12s on pump gas? See what kind of mileage I can get out of it. I think it would be a lot of fun! Maybe I'd even make it an automatic to make Mr. Hunkins happy :)

1. Almost completely useless build to readers though, all you're offering is a Chevy 6 build. Any idiot can track down the parts for a Nova, so you aren't going to be helping many people get into the hobby. Then again, you guys are pure industry...

Oh, I'm pulling for an a-body Cuda and then a Chevelle for the next two builds.

2. Well hum... the guy above does have a good point.

What about a later Nova buildup, post 72? They can be just as quick and good, and can still be bought for a decent price.

You might be a Chevy Girl deep down, but you can be all Mopar at the surface!.... As long as you don't let the Chevy part out...lol

Then again, a 74 Dodge Dart Swinger, built up new Hemi... oh the possibilities.

3. Hemi's cost prohibitive, Slant 6 has great coverage as it is... Any a-body Mopar is going to look far better than some Nova though. A late 60's Valiant kicks the teeth out of the plain, completely overdone Nova.

Oldsmobile Jetfires occasionally pop up on Craigslist, they're way cooler than Novas. (F-85 for the same effect.) AMC Hornet is better than the Nova, just don't convert one into Chevy...

You shouldn't let Goodguys blind you to what else is out there. Don't make us hire some guys with orange Camaros, Mustangs, and Novas to follow you around Costa Mesa next year.

4. Mopar Action did the Green Brick Valiant and it kicked arse on the track. A 68 Dart Post car... turbo slant six.... oh the ideas.

I meant a newer Hemi, like one from a truck or dodge car. Take a Hemi out of a Dodge truck, throw in a 6-speed and a carb into a light A-body and have fun!

5. Actually I've changed my mind on this Nova thing...

It would be a lot more interesting if you had a build-off of budget 6 bangers in general. A central Goodguys with autocross would be preferable, so everybody could prove their car's the real deal in both range and competition. Just keep the Goodguys '72 cutoff and restrict the 6 cylinders to what actually could have come with the car. Glorify the budget beater capable of road tripping and cruising.

There's probably somebody at bigblockdart.com that's working on dropping a new Hemi into an a-body, but I haven't read through many threads on there. 340 Scamp build caught my attention and that's all I've kept up with.

6. There is a guy on Moparts.com that has dropped a new Hemi into a Demon. Looks really nicely done and is fast he says.

7. Sheesh, would have expected some defense of the Nova by now... Why don't you go work for some all Chevy magazine and be irrelevant over there? You'll never escape your own shadow building the same thing over and over with less effort every time.
