They race what they sell, and Aeromotive’s latest test bed steps it up a notch with an 8-second dragster.

5.4L Cobra Jet crate motor puts the Aeromotive dragster in the eights.

The fuel system gurus at Aeromotive have been building some of the best electronic fuel injection fuel system components for years. They are especially well-known for their work on late-model Ford-powered vehicles, especially Mustangs. Aeromotive fuel systems and components can be found on virtually every competitive Mustang currently racing in the NMRA, NMCA, ORSCA, and PSCA. So what does a company like Aeromotive do for an encore when they’ve already got the door slammer competition so thoroughly covered? You build a dragster, that’s what.

The Aeromotive dragster features a 5.4L Cobra Jet engine from Ford Racing, and the first ever Aeromotive Stealth Fuel System built for a dragster. The fuel system comprises an “in-tank” Aeromotive Eliminator Fuel Pump, a Pro-Series Fuel Pressure Regulator (P/N 13110), and Aeromotive Fuel Rails for the Ford 5.4L (P/N 14144). In addition, the dragster carries a Powerglide transmission, and zoomie headers.

Aeromotive’s Cobra Jet Dragster now competes in NHRA Super Comp. This class features an 8.90 e.t. index. “We are fully aware of the potential of these engines and had no doubt that it would be fast enough, the question was really whether or not we could be competitive right out of the box without any testing and no time to really dial the car in,” says Steve Matusek, Aeromotive President.

With its first ever trip down the track, the CJ Dragster went 9.60 at 152 mph. After a couple more qualifying runs, Matusek drove the car to a second-round elimination by just one one-thousandth. Its best time and mile per hour: 8.899 at 154.95 mph. “I think we did exactly what we thought these engines could do: go out and be competitive right out of the shoot with a crate engine. A supercharged, EFI engine nonetheless,” Matusek says. “We plan to campaign this car in NHRA Super Comp for the majority of this season. Who knows, maybe we’ll try our hand at Top Dragster.”

The Aeromotive Cobra Jet Dragster comes on the coattails of the wildly popular Aeromotive Twin Turbo Mustang powered by a Ford 5.4L Modular engine, and is soon to be followed by the new Aeromotive Cobra Jet set to debut later this year.
