This transmission builder offers super-strong transmissions with one of the best warranties in the industry.

PerformaBuilt Transmissions of Sugarloaf, PA has thrown down the gauntlet by offering a significant one-year warranty on their entire product line. That warranty is extended to two years if customers buy a PerformaBuilt converter with their transmission. The thing we like is that PerformaBuilt places no conditions on their transmission warranty; there is no mileage stipulation, and no “abuse” clause. In fact, racing does not void the warranty.

According to PerformaBuilt president, Alan Pickering: "We firmly believe that we make the best high-performance transmissions and torque converters in the world. This warranty is unprecedented anywhere in the racing industry, and it shows how serious we are about our quality. It’s a clear indication that the purchase of a PerformaBuilt transmission is a good, safe investment for any racer or high-performance car owner.” Those are strong words indeed, and a check of the PerformaBuilt website shows numerous happy customers doing huge wheelstands.

As for the actual product line, PerformaBuilt specializes in Ford and GM transmissions, most especially overdrive units. We checked out specifications and power ratings for all the popular boxes such as 700-R4, 4L60E, 4L65E, 4L80E, 2004-R, TH350, TH400, AODE, and 4R70W. We found different power-handling levels at different prices for a variety of uses. As far as pricing goes, we checked the cost for a Turbo 400 with a power threshold of 1,000 hp that also had a manual valve body, and it was listed for $1,550. Considering this type of unit would be sitting behind a drag car making enough beans to push it into the 8s—and still have a one- or two-year warranty—that’s a pretty good deal. Shipping in the continental United States is free too!
