After a small problem with the wrong length pushrods last week (they were too short), we finally got the longer ones we needed (9.500-inch intake, 8.650-inch exhaust) for our solid-roller COMP Cams lifters. Andy Mitchell of Outlaw Racing Engines in Upland, CA, has been helping us assemble our 509-ci big-block Chevy using the old 502 block and forged crank from Project X’s old RamJet powerplant. This new engine, which we’re calling the Pile Driver, is being based around Trick Flow’s new PowerPort 320 cc heads and single-plane intake. The cam is a COMP solid roller unit (.661/.668-inch lift, 254/260 degrees duration (at .050) and a 105 degree lobe separation).
We also got some good news today that we’ll be the first magazine to test Holley’s new Ultra Dominator carb, which features a billet aluminum base, black anodized billet metering blocks, and black anodized booster inserts. We’re told it also has a state-of-the-art metering circuit that puts previous carbs to shame. We can’t wait until we get it next week, and we might even post a sneak peak shot of it, so keep checking back. (This coming Tuesday night sounds about right.)
All we need to do before hitting the dyno is to bolt the TFS valve covers on, and bolt on the Holley carb. We’re looking for over 700 hp on pump gas from our May 19 dyno session, so stay tuned. I’ll post the results here that night when we’re done!
