The Laguna Engine Swap

1975 Laguna

More progress gets made on the ’75 Laguna as we pull the old engine out and bolt in the new 408 small-block.

Project Talladega, our ’75 Laguna, has been at Don Lee Auto Service in Rancho Cucamonga, CA for the last two weeks as it undergoes its driveline transformation. Proprietor, Tim Lee, is overseeing the engine and trans swap, and doing all the mods associated with that. So far, the old 400 has been yanked out, along with the Turbo 350 trans, and the T&L Racing 408 and Phoenix 700-R4 automatic overdrive have been laid in place.

The tally for doing an engine/trans swap like this does go up a bunch when you address things like the cooling system (water pump, radiator, water neck, hoses), fuel system (fuel pump, fuel line, AN fittings), engine (air cleaner, breathers, breather tank, throttle cable), exhaust (headers, exhaust, gaskets), transmission (dip stick, cooler, lines, shifter, shift linkage, driveshaft, new rearend gears, lube, crossmember), and other odds and ends (spray paint, motor mounts, raw materials). Not including the engine and trans, we’ve topped the $2k mark.

As a point of interest, the old (running) 400 2 bbl. long-block is for sale, as is the take-out Turbo 350 trans, which was a racing unit purchased new last August when the original one blew up in Phoenix. As we get more updates on the Laguna, we’ll let you know how things are progressing.
