If you're interested in sending in photos of your car for our Hometown Hotrodding section, please
This job has given me a much more critical eye for photography than I had before. I look back though my thousands of build-up and car show pictures with my Camaro and see a ton of photos I would have never let leave the camera now-a-days.
With that said, I ask you please make sure you send in quality photos for our Hometown Hotrodding section. Unfortunately I have had to turn down several entries due to inadequate photos. This is not a matter of the quality of the camera, any point-and-shoot camera that lives outside of your cell phone can take a nice photo if you know how to use it.
Editor Johnny Hunkins has given some guidelines over the years though our photo contest entry form, but I'd like to share my own.
Composition:
PLEASE do not crop any of the car out of the frame. I get dozens of pictures a week where the nose of the car is cut off and the back has 2-feet of nothing on the other side!
Quality/Size:
As a general rule, if your picture doesn't look good at full-screen size, it probably isn't good enough for print. I see magazines that publish hazy or pixilated photos in their reader's rides sections, and I don't want PHR on that list.
Variety:
As beautiful as your paint may be, please send photos of the engine, interior, suspension, and of your progress. The more photos to choose from the better.
With these tips in mind, keep the submissions coming!
