If you follow my ’68 Chevelle project (Project Street Sweeper), you may remember the craziness I went through in fabricating a stainless steel power steering pump bracket. When I dropped the 496-ci big-block in last year, I figured there must be a ton of power steering pump brackets out there, but there wasn’t. For a while, I cruised on the old, mangled piece of bronze-age metal that passed for a bracket, until I started throwing belts at the track. My search for a new bracket came up empty, so I made my own template, and had it cut with a waterjet. Even though it was stainless steel, it still bends when you put tension on it, so it’s far from ideal.
When I saw Philadelphia Racing Products’ new power steering pump bracket, I just about did the Snoopy dance. This mounting kit (part No. PRP-8200, $94.99) is designed for small-blocks (big-blocks, we hope, are coming soon) and is designed to work with all GM Saginaw-style pumps with attached reservoir. It attaches to the lower left driver’s side and is made of 6061-T6 billet aluminum, and comes with stainless steel mounting hardware.
