When this ordinary-looking Pontiac Tempest LeMans went up for auction at eBay Motors, the seller knew it had been drag raced at one time, but beyond that, he had no idea he had a “Tempest in a Teapot.” As questions began rolling in about the unusual solid-axle Tempest (they were originally equipped with an independent rear suspension and rope drive), it readily became apparent that this was one of only six 421 Super Duty LeMans built in 1963.
The car in question has been verified as the one delivered to Stan Long Pontiac in Detroit, Michigan, and raced by Stan Antlocer. Once these facts were established, the bidding on the Tempest, which lacks its original front clip and 421 Super Duty engine, escalated through the roof. When the auction closed, the winning bid was $226,521.63. (You gotta love the 63 cents at the end of the bid!) The front clip is owned by Mike Glass of Jensen Beach, Florida, and features the louvered hood, scoop, and racing stripe that the car was originally campaigned by Antlocer with. Will the two reunite? Will this rare piece of history ever turn a wheel in anger again? We’ll keep you posted! In the meantime, enjoy reading the details of the eBay sale at the link below—while it lasts.
