The annual Engine Masters Challenge is hosted each year by the University of Northwestern Ohio, or just plain UNOH for short. Many technical disciplines are taught, and most of them deal in part or entirely with racing and hot rodding. Fortunately, students who enroll at UNOH have a faculty that is passionate about performance. You may have seen our feature earlier this year on UNOH instructor Lonnie Schulz’s ’71 Grabber Maverick (“Horse Trader,” March 2008). We were approached by Lonnie at last year’s EMC, and he wanted us to see his Maverick. We agreed that it was cool, and featured it. But he also told us that many of his fellow teachers had cool cars as well. This year, Lonnie rounded up some of them for this group photo, which I grabbed yesterday during the EMC lunch break.
Starting from the left, we have instructor Lonnie Schulz (Manual Drivelines, High Performance Drivelines, Accessory Trends), posing with his ’76 Maverick and his ’89 Mustang. The Maverick has a 306 with a 6-71 BDS blower, T-5 trans, 4.86 gears and a spool. The Mustang has a 347-ci small-block Ford, Art Carr C-4, 4.11 gears, and runs high 10s. Dave McPherson (Automatics, High Performance Suspension & Steering, High Performance Welding) is posing with his yellow ’72 Nova, which has a 327 small-block, a Saginaw 4-speed, and 3.42 gears. Terry Enyart teaches Electrical 1 & 2, and Automotive Engine Performance. He’s posing with his ’67 Firebird that’s equipped with a 400-ci Pontiac, M20 Muncie 4-speed, and 3.36 gears. Nathan Mailhot (Electrical, and Electronics 1 & 2) owns the snazzy blue ’68 Camaro, loaded with a 527hp 383 SBC, Turbo 350, GM 12-bolt, and 4.11 gears. Brady Emmons (Automotive HVAC, Accessory Trends) owns the white ’68 RS Camaro, also with a 383 stroker, 4-speed Saginaw trans, and 4.10 gears. And closest to the camera is instructor, Chuck Elwer with his 350-equipped ’70 Chevelle convertible.
Thanks guys! I wish I knew about this school when I was graduating high school, but at least it’s not too late for the younger crop of hot rodders.
