The Mustang III - Ford Probe

Ford's Wanna-be Mustang Replacement

The front-wheel-drive platform didn't go over well with fans, so Ford started working on a more-modern Mustang.

In 1989, Ford started selling their Probe. Somehow, maybe it was a practical joke, the name Probe was actually allowed on the exterior of the car. Aimed to be a competitor to the Acura Integra, the Probe came in a GT model with either a turbo 4-cylinder for the early years or a v-6 in the second generation. They out-performed the Integras, but the after market didn't support the car as well as they did the Acuras.

I owned one of these cars, a 1993 Probe GT, and for a front wheel drive, non-v8 car, it was a blast. Obviously there was no throttle induced oversteer or roaring exhaust, but the car had a lot of spunk. Very light on it's feet, it had decent power, lots of traction, and an amazingly matched set of inputs. This car had the best feeling steering, shifter, clutch, brake and gas of any car I have ever driven. Too bad!
