Back in 1982, the Regal Grand National was introduced. Named after the NASCAR series, it was intended for the performance crowd. The first batch came with a 4.1-liter V6 in both turbo and naturally aspirated. The GN took a break for a year and returned in 1984 with a more refined 3.8-liter V6 with upgraded induction and intercooling. These changes boosted power from 180 to 245. Dressed in all-black with black paint, bumpers, grille, and headlight trim, the GN was really easy to spot.
In 1987, the WE4 option was offered. It replaced the rear brake drums with aluminum units, adjusted trim package, special wheels, and light-weight bumper brackets.
And then there was the GNX. Buick knew their next-year model would use a front wheel drive platform, so this was their last chance to really make an impression. The GNX’s engine put out an impressive 276-horsepower and 360-lb/ft of torque. The competitors of the era were lucky to be putting out 250 lb/fts of torque! There was a laundry list of options on this car but to list them would be quite a chore. Let’s just say, this is one cool car. Definitely the best thing to come out of the 80’s.
